Seeker's Guide to the Rhythm of Yesteryear
Welcome to 'Seeker's Guide to the Rhythm of Yesteryear ' , the one and only all in one summarised
history of musical genres (1950-'79) that hovered over the globe, amidst the turbulence of a creative
revolution where individualism won the day. More than a discography and less than a concise
dictionary. 'Seeker's Guide' finds the hidden riffs, expounds the songs and gives integrity to poets
and musicians that were overlooked. The book itself started as a website that evolved into a 550 page
document reflecting the finer guitarists and groups of the sixties and seventies with particular focus
on bands that were extremely talented, but received little exposure namely The Keef Hartley Band,
String Driven Thing, Tractor, Savage Rose, Velvet Opera etc. During the first months
of January 2009 London's Record Collector gave the book a four star review coupled with a BBC
interview on by Shaar Pillay.
Several articles have already been used by the BBC like 'The Slicing of an Evergreen Apple' - The
Story of Badfinger while numerous musicians have contacted the author Shiloh namely Ray Martinez
of Spring Martin Cockerham of Spirogyra, Gordon Haskell, Savage Rose, Paul Brett, Fred
Glickstein of the Flock, Rick Wakeman, Keef Hartley, Ray Ennis - Swinging Blue Jeans, Mellow
Candle etc. The highlight if the book is the controversial write up on Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly
and one of the most astounding insights into the life of Bob Dylan. Critical acclaim has also been given
to the articles on the Monkees, Focus,Paul Brett's Sage, The Flock and Wishbone Ash.
The strength and unique stance of the book is really the emphasis on songs rather than albums to which
the author claims to have listened to every one. Check out the poetical descriptions of various songs,
nothing like this has ever been written before. The book is also the first summarised history of music
reflecting eight genres namely Rock and Roll, Surf Guitar, Psychedelia, British Invasion, Birth of the
Blues, Legends of Folk, the Progressive Rock Era and the history of the Seventies Rock Warriors
(The Who, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk etc.) Of note every song mentioned, the author has listened to
intensely as to allow the reader space to feel the energy. The index at the back of the book has
thousands of songs listed in alphabetical order with page references. Also listed are hundreds of cult
sixties soundtracks and thousands of musicians. All musicians and groups are in bold throughout the
entirety of the book. The book is absolutely great as a family reference to trivia from the past with
lots of connection to the present and should close the generation gap, which is really what it's all
about. Much of the music written about is aired on Shiloh's Cape Town Radio Show Arts & Community
FMR 101.3. fm To cap the value of the book Keyboard wizard Duncan Mackay of ex 10CC/ Alan
Parsons has included a foreword.
